Abalone refers to a group of marine snails in the genus Haliotis, found in temperate and cold coastal waters around the world. They thrive on rocky reefs, often among kelp beds, where they cling to substrate and feed on marine algae. Significant abalone populations occur along the Pacific coasts of North America, as well as in the coastal waters of Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Because of their colorful, iridescent inner shell layer—known as nacre or “mother-of-pearl”—abalone shells have been valued for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that humans have used abalone for at least 100,000 years for ornamentation, tools, and decorative purposes.
