Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral, first discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada, by Canadian chemist and geologist Henry How. Initially named “silicoborocalcite” for its chemical composition, the mineral was later renamed “Howlite” by American geologist James Dwight Dana, in honor of How's contributions to its discovery and study.
 
While Nova Scotia is the original source, Howlite can also be found in various other regions, including the United States (notably California), Mexico, Germany, Turkey, and Serbia. Though it is sometimes confused with or marketed as "white turquoise" or even mislabeled as "Magnesite" due to its similar appearance, Howlite is a distinct mineral in its own right.
