Lapis Lazuli is a beautiful blue stone mined primarily in Afghanistan, though it can also be found in Chile, Pakistan, Russia, and Siberia. Legends of Lapis Lazuli date back as far as 4000 BCE, with artifacts made from the stone dating even farther back. Ancient Egyptians regarded it as a stone of the gods, Pharaohs wore Lapis Lazuli as a symbol of their status, and their tombs were filled with objects crafted from it.
 
Many Renaissance painters ground the stone into powder to create a pigment called ultramarine. This pigment was expensive and retained its vibrancy far better than others. It's reported that Michelangelo used Lapis Lazuli pigment to paint the sky in The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.
 
Pyrite, commonly referred to as "fool's gold," has been found in the United States, Kazakhstan, Spain, and Italy. It gets its name from the Greek word pyr, meaning "fire," due to its ability to spark when struck against stone or metal. Because of its appearance, Pyrite is often mistaken for gold, but it is much harder and not as easily scratched.
