Red Moroccan Agate is a distinctive variety of agate sourced mainly from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, especially around Kerrouchen. It forms within Triassic basaltic rocks, where silica-rich fluids slowly crystallize inside cavities to create banded agate nodules. Scientific studies show that its red and reddish-brown tones come from iron-bearing minerals such as hematite and goethite, and its internal structure may include layers of opal-CT, low-α quartz, moganite, and occasional inclusions of copper sulfides, titanium oxides, or calcite.
Visually, this agate is celebrated for its vivid red, orange, brown, and pink hues arranged in bands, seams, or vein-like patterns. As a form of microcrystalline quartz, it has the hardness and durability typical of agate, making it ideal for cutting, polishing, and jewelry use.
In metaphysical traditions, Red Moroccan Agate is associated with grounding, strength, and vitality. Its red coloration links it to the root chakra and symbolizes stability and connection to the earth. Because the color derives from iron content, many attribute “fire-element” qualities to the stone, viewing it as supportive for courage, passion, emotional resilience, and transformative inner work.
