The name Tourmaline is derived from the Sinhalese word tōramalli, meaning mixed gems, which was used to describe the colorful stones found in Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka). According to Egyptian folklore, the stone's vivid colors were formed when it traveled up from the center of the Earth and passed through a rainbow, absorbing its full spectrum of colors along the way.
