Sodalite is a striking deep blue mineral first discovered in Greenland in the early 19th century. Since then, it has been found in a variety of locations worldwide, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Bolivia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Namibia, and beyond. A member of the feldspathoid group, sodalite forms in silica-poor, sodium-rich igneous rocks created through volcanic activity in alkali-rich environments.
 
Its name derives from the Greek words “soda” (referring to its sodium content) and “lithos” meaning “stone.” Sodalite gained popularity in Europe during the 1800s, particularly after large deposits were discovered in Ontario, Canada, where it was even dubbed “Princess Blue” in honor of a royal visit.
 
Beyond its geological appeal, sodalite is also valued for its metaphysical properties. It is believed to promote clear communication, calm the mind, and foster collaboration.
